Is your religious faith an integral part of life?
A large majority of people in the U.S. believe in the existence of God, and even if not religiously affiliated, still claim to pray. I feel that to whatever extent a person’s faith affects his or her daily life, it should be involved in his or her mental health treatment. Treatment that aligns with individual values is more believable and effective. Faith-based therapy combines theology with behavioral science; psychological support with spiritual support.
Are you concerned therapy might contradict your religious beliefs?
Most of us don’t believe that physical illnesses are a result of a spiritual failure such as our ancestors did at different points in time. And yet we often pray for healing, search out a faith community, or find solace in holy scriptures for physical problems. Mental illnesses should also not be viewed as spiritually-induced; research gives us plenty of evidence to support this view. Yet spiritual practices can be helpful in improving your mental health. Therapy is only a supplement to religion, not a replacement.
Do you wish to incorporate your faith into therapy sessions?
If so, I will aim to help you make the connection between your faith and your treatment. Discussions and homework may reference scriptures, prayer, and teachings that help to motivate your growth. Maybe you will be encouraged to engage with a faith community. My knowledge base is broader in the Christian religion, but I am familiar with other religions due to an educational background in comparative religion. I will take your lead in how this may look specifically for your religious beliefs and situation.
Are you looking for a Christian counselor in particular?
I have studied the Bible formally and informally for years and personally am a follower of Jesus Christ and His gospel. If you wish to receive specifically Christian counsel, I will not teach or preach. I do not attempt to solve mental health issues with Biblical teaching or religious standards of behavior. Instead, I provide psychotherapy while referencing and reminding of Biblical truth. I will use Biblical examples of therapeutic truths (i.e., peace, forgiveness, love, boundaries, etc.) to help lead your treatment. I desire your own understanding of Jesus Christ to bring clarity and healing to the problems you face.
